June 2026 saw Art Basel take over Switzerland, major museum shows open across the US, and New Jersey's outdoor art come alive for summer.

The events described in this roundup have taken place.
June carried the momentum of spring into the summer season, as the art world’s center of gravity shifted to Switzerland for its most important fair, even as the Venice Biennale continued to draw pilgrims to the lagoon.
The month’s marquee event was Art Basel in Basel, Switzerland, which ran June 18 to 21 at Messe Basel. As the flagship edition of the world’s most influential art-fair brand, Basel gathered leading galleries from across the globe and functioned, as it does every year, as a barometer for the market and a preview of the ideas moving through contemporary art. Meanwhile, the Venice Biennale remained in full swing, giving travelers a rare summer in which the two poles of the European art calendar, the commercial and the curatorial, were open at once.
American museums leaned into the season with ambitious new openings. In New York, the Queens Museum unveiled Sonia Boyce: “Demonstrate” on June 27, an immersive, collaborative installation from the British artist rooted in community and activism, on view into 2027. Downtown, the Museum of Modern Art prepared to open, on 1 July, Pierre Huyghe’s uncanny “Uumwelt,” in which artificial-intelligence systems reconstruct images from human brain activity, a show squarely at the intersection of art and technology.
June also carried its annual cultural weight beyond the gallery walls: Juneteenth and Pride Month filled museums, cultural centers, and public squares with exhibitions, performances, and programming celebrating Black creativity and LGBTQ+ artists across the country.
Closer to home, summer is when New Jersey’s outdoor art comes alive, and Grounds For Sculpture was again the centerpiece: its Lotus Pond and tropical plantings in full color, and Roberto Lugo’s twenty-foot interactive work “Put Yourself in the Picture”, installed in 2022, that invited visitors to become part of the art. The state’s museums in Newark, Montclair, and New Brunswick carried their exhibitions into the warmer months, while festivals, open-studio weekends, and outdoor arts markets brought creativity into towns across the state.
From a fair floor in Basel to a sculpture garden in Hamilton, June was a reminder that the art calendar never really slows for summer. It just moves outdoors.
Corrected on 2 October 2026. An earlier version of this article said the Museum of Modern Art was presenting Pierre Huyghe’s “Uumwelt” in June and described Roberto Lugo’s “Put Yourself in the Picture” as part of the 2026 season at Grounds For Sculpture. “Uumwelt” opens on 1 July 2026 and runs to 29 November 2026, and the Lugo work was installed in 2022.
