Sussex County: Art Institutions by Municipality

In New Jersey's far northwest corner, Sussex has fewer art institutions than its neighbors, and one of the most important in the country. A town-by-town guide.

CreARTivity Educational Team

Sussex is the far northwest corner of New Jersey, a county of ridges and farmland where the state runs out and the Delaware begins. It has fewer art institutions than its crowded neighbours, and one of them is among the most important in the country. In the fields of the Delaware Water Gap, an abandoned nineteenth-century farm village called Bevans was given over in 1970 to blacksmiths, potters, weavers and woodworkers, and has been teaching fine craft ever since. Down in Newton, the county seat, a 1924 theatre and a gallery on Spring Street carry the rest. What follows is a guide to those spaces, gathered town by town.

A county does not need many institutions to matter. Sussex has a craft school that draws students from across the country to a valley with no traffic lights, and that is a kind of cultural wealth the cities cannot buy. Around it work the small galleries of Sparta and Franklin, the historical societies, and the artists who came for the quiet and stayed. Next in the series we cross into another North Jersey county and keep the map growing, one town at a time.

Corrected on 2 October 2026. The Newton Theatre entry now notes that the theatre, which opened in 1924 and seats 605, is run today as SkyPAC, the Skylands Performing Arts Center.

  • The Educational Team writes CreARTivity’s reference work: histories of artistic disciplines, guides to cultural traditions, and the county-by-county surveys of arts institutions across New Jersey. Its brief is to be useful to someone meeting a subject for the first time and still worth reading to someone who already knows it. Edited by Marie Juliane David.
