This event has taken place. National Arts Month 2026 was held in February 2026.

Every February, the Philippines dedicates an entire month to honoring its artists, preserving its cultural heritage, and bringing communities closer to the creative traditions that define Filipino identity. Known as National Arts Month, or NAM, this nationwide celebration transforms public spaces, galleries, schools, and community centers into platforms for artistic expression across the archipelago.

A Celebration Rooted in History

National Arts Month was established through Presidential Proclamation No. 683, signed by President Corazon C. Aquino in 1991. The proclamation formally designated February as a month of recognition for Filipino artistic talent and creativity. Today, the celebration is coordinated by the National Commission for Culture and the Arts, which works with local governments, schools, cultural organizations, and community groups to host programs that promote arts appreciation at every level of society. What began as a presidential decree has grown into one of the most anticipated cultural events in the Filipino calendar.

A Theme of Truth and Courage

For 2026, National Arts Month carried the theme “Ani ng Sining: Katotohanan at Giting,” which translates to “Fruits of the Arts: Truth and Valor.” The theme positions creativity as a vehicle for truth-telling, social development, and the preservation of national identity. Filipino artists were invited to use their work to reflect the realities of their society and to inspire courage in their audiences.

The celebration opened on February 1 with a grand launch at Rizal Park in Manila. The event featured a vibrant parade and performances by some of the country’s most respected cultural institutions, including the UST Salinggawi Dance Troupe, the UST Singers, and the Philippine Ballet Theater. LGBTQ+ community artists also performed, reflecting the inclusive spirit that has grown central to the month’s programming.

Events That Bring Art to Every Community

One of the most beloved recurring programs during National Arts Month is Art FriDates, a series of weekly Friday showcases held across the country. Cities and provinces including Pasay, Angono, Bulacan, Biñan, Quezon Province, and Muntinlupa host these events, bringing live performances and exhibitions directly to local audiences. The goal is to make art accessible beyond museum walls and metropolitan centers.

February is also the busiest month for the Philippine art market. Major events such as Art Fair Philippines, the Luneta Art Fair, and Alt Art draw collectors, curators, and art enthusiasts from across the country and abroad. Gallery shows throughout Metro Manila complement these fairs, creating a full calendar of opportunities to discover emerging and established Filipino artists.

Why National Arts Month Matters

More than a calendar event, National Arts Month is a statement about the value a nation places on its creative community. In the Philippines, art is understood as a living record of history, struggle, resilience, and joy. By dedicating an entire month to celebrating that record, the country affirms that artists are not on the margins of society but at its very heart.

For anyone interested in global cultural celebrations, National Arts Month in the Philippines offers a powerful example of how a government and its people can come together to honor creativity as a public good.

Corrected on 2 October 2026. An earlier version of this article gave the 2026 theme as “Ani ng Sining: Katotohanan at Gitis”. The correct theme is “Ani ng Sining: Katotohanan at Giting”.
