Hispanic Heritage Month: Celebrating the Art of Latin America and the Caribbean

From September 15 to October 15, Hispanic Heritage Month celebrates the vibrant art, music, and culture of Latin America and the Caribbean.

From September 15 to October 15, the United States celebrates National Hispanic Heritage Month, honoring the histories, cultures, and contributions of Americans whose roots trace to Mexico, Central and South America, the Caribbean, and Spain. For a magazine rooted in the cultures of the Caribbean and the Americas, it is a celebration close to the heart.

Why it begins on September 15

The observance started as Hispanic Heritage Week in 1968 under President Lyndon B. Johnson, and was expanded to a full month in 1988 under President Ronald Reagan. The mid-month start date is deliberate: September 15 marks the independence anniversary of five Latin American nations, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua. Mexico celebrates its independence on September 16 and Chile on September 18, so the month opens on a wave of national celebrations across the Americas.

A world of color and rhythm

The creative footprint of the Hispanic and Latino world is vast and vibrant. In visual art, it runs from ancient Indigenous craft to the great muralists and the bold folk-art traditions still practiced today. In music, it gave the world salsa, merengue, bachata, cumbia, mariachi, and so much more, rhythms that fill dance floors on every continent. In literature, its writers carried magical realism and a poetry of memory into the global imagination. This is a culture that treats color, music, and storytelling as everyday necessities, not luxuries.

A bridge of cultures

What makes Hispanic and Latino heritage so rich is its blend of Indigenous, African, and European roots, woven together over centuries into something wholly its own. That spirit of fusion, of cultures meeting and creating something new, sits at the very heart of the Caribbean and the Americas, and it is a powerful model of creativity as connection.

Celebrating the month

Attending a cultural festival, exploring Latin American and Caribbean art and music, supporting Hispanic and Latino artists and businesses, or learning the history behind the flags of the region are all ways to take part. Hispanic Heritage Month is a celebration of color, rhythm, and resilience, and of communities whose creativity continues to shape the culture we all share.
