World Art Day: A Global Celebration of Creativity on April 15

World Art Day, held April 15 on Leonardo da Vinci's birthday, is a global celebration of creativity and the artists who enrich our world.

Each April, the world pauses to celebrate art itself. World Art Day, held on April 15, is a global observance dedicated to the fine arts and to the role creativity plays in human life, a single day when museums, schools, artists, and art lovers everywhere come together to honor the act of making.

Why April 15?

The date is no accident: April 15 is the birthday of Leonardo da Vinci, chosen as a symbol of art’s power to bridge cultures, disciplines, and eras. Da Vinci, painter, inventor, scientist, and endlessly curious mind, embodies the idea that art and knowledge are inseparable, which is exactly the spirit World Art Day sets out to celebrate.

From an idea to a worldwide day

World Art Day was proposed by the International Association of Art (IAA/AIAP), a partner organization of UNESCO,. In 2019, UNESCO officially proclaimed April 15 as World Art Day, giving it recognition on the global cultural calendar. Today it is marked in dozens of countries with exhibitions, workshops, live demonstrations, and free public programming.

What the day stands for

At its heart, World Art Day carries a simple, powerful message: art belongs to everyone, and it deserves to be supported. The observance draws attention to the importance of arts education, the livelihoods of working artists, and the freedom of creative expression. It’s a reminder that a healthy culture invests in its artists, not only its masterpieces.

How to take part

You don’t need a gallery pass to celebrate. Making something of your own, visiting a local museum or studio, sharing the work of an artist you love, or introducing a child to painting or drawing all honor the spirit of the day. World Art Day is an invitation to celebrate, support, and pass on the creativity that connects us, the same invitation CreARTivity extends all year long.

What UNESCO says the day is for

UNESCO records that World Art Day was proclaimed at the 40th session of its General Conference in 2019. Its stated purpose is to promote the development, diffusion and enjoyment of art, and to reinforce the links between artistic creations and society. The US committee of the International Association of Art names the Turkish artist Bedri Baykam as the creator and instigator of the day, and describes its slogan as “See Art, Do Art, Be Art.”

That slogan is a useful way to plan the day, because it invites you to do more than look. Seeing, making and simply being around art all count.

Ways to take part

Visit a museum, gallery or public mural near you and spend ten unhurried minutes with a single work. Make something small yourself, even a sketch on the back of an envelope. Or pick up a book: our guide to books for beginner art lovers is a gentle place to begin, and the story of how we learn to look is one Leonardo would have enjoyed. If you create, share your work with us through Fanarts Corner.
