Union County opened Haitian Heritage Month on Friday, May 1, 2026, with a flag raising ceremony at 4 p.m. on the steps of the County Courthouse at 2 Broad Street in Elizabeth. The courthouse was lit in blue and red that evening and again on Monday, May 18, for Haitian Flag Day. Inside the Administration Building, a gallery exhibit on the sixth floor gathered work by local artists and was open to the public on weekdays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. throughout May. Two of the county’s commissioners, Michèle S. Delisfort and Stanley J. Neron, are of Haitian heritage. The full calendar was published at ucnj.org/haitianheritage.

Corrected on 2 October 2026. An earlier version of this article said that three Union County commissioners are of Haitian heritage. The county’s announcement names two, Commissioner Michèle S. Delisfort and Commissioner Stanley J. Neron. We also removed the description of the exhibit as free and as showing only Haitian artists, which the announcement does not state.
