Running August 7 to 30, the Edinburgh International Festival was the Fringe’s more formal counterpart, bringing leading orchestras, opera houses, dance companies, and theater-makers to the city’s major concert halls and theaters. Now in its eighth decade, it presented opera, classical music, dance, and theater of the highest order, and this year its three weeks coincided with the Royal Scottish Academy’s bicentenary, one more reason Edinburgh became the most concentrated arts environment in the world each August.
